The Battle of Fort Sumter took place in Charleston County,
South Carolina from April 12-14 1861
South Carolina from April 12-14 1861
THE OUTCOME OF THE BATTLE
The Confederacy won the battle. On April 13th 1861, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, and evacuated his troops the next day.
BATTLE STRATEGY
The Union troops were in Fort Sumter because Major Anderson believed that his men would be safer there. When the Confederate army figured out they were there, they surrounded the Charleston harbor with many men and heavy guns. They fired the first shot on April 12, 1861 that began the Civil War. Lincoln sent in ships with supplies and men to help the Union troops trapped inside the fort. The Confederacy's strategy was to get rid of Lincolns ships, then keep the fort surrounded on the side where the land was. Fort Sumter was a fort designed to protect the U.S., not to fire from the side of the fort where the land was because the canons and guns were not set that way. So, the Union could not fire against the Confederacy. Eventually, Anderson surrendered the fort, and got his men out safely on April 14, 1861. This was a Confederacy victory.
